Circular Lab of the Future Workshop

We learned a lot at the “Circular Lab of the Future” workshop organized by Green Labs Austria, Uni Wien and Merck yesterday.

We contributed to the workshop by collecting, recording and sorting all plastic material we used in a week in our lab. This was normalized by the number of scientists working and hours spend in the lab (a big thanks goes out to our PhD student Marie who did most of the organization, motivation and sorting). By visualizing how much plastic we use in our daily lab life, the topic of recycling became even more relevant for us.

Thanks for inviting us and for starting this initiative!

  • First pick-up for recycling!

Today Peter from helfenstattwegwerfen.at picked up our first collected waste for recycling . Together with our colleagues from the Grebien lab we managed to gather 42kg of plastic waste!

Peter kindly took the time to explain what exactly happens to the plastic, how it is separated, washed and shredded, to be eventually re-used. We hope to motivate more and more labs @Vetmeduni and other universities in Vienna to join us for a more sustainable research!
